Madinah has been named a member of UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network in the field of gastronomy, becoming the second Saudi city to earn this global recognition after Buraidah. UNESCO made the announcement on October 31 as part of World Cities Day celebrations.
Mayada Badr, CEO of the Culinary Arts Commission, said the recognition reflects ongoing efforts to establish Madinah as a globally recognized and sustainable culinary brand. In collaboration with several local partners, the Culinary Arts Commission prepared Madinah’s nomination dossier, supported by detailed research data and documentation that met UNESCO’s standards.
Madinah’s culinary identity is rooted in its rich agricultural heritage and centuries of cultural exchange along historic trade and pilgrimage routes. The city attracts millions of visitors annually, offering a diverse food culture that blends tradition and innovation.
Building a global culinary brand is key to enhancing sustainable tourism and empowering local producers Badr said. “Reimagining Madinah as not only a religious destination but also a cultural and culinary hub will attract new visitors to extend their stays and increase local spending.
