Modi’s Leadership Boosted as BJP Wins Control of West Bengal

NEW DELHI: In a crucial state election, the Hindu nationalist party led by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken control of West Bengal, an opposition bastion. The Bharatiya Janata Party won at least 124 seats in the 294-member West Bengal assembly and was leading in 83 more, according to partial results given by the Indian Election Commission on Monday.

Modi’s party has never held power in West Bengal and has spent years attempting to overthrow the All India Trinamool Congress administration, which is headed by Mamata Banerjee, the state chief minister. She has been in charge of the politically significant state since 2011 and is one of Modi’s most well-known detractors.

Following the removal of millions of voters from the electoral records by the Election Commission, opposition parties have harshly condemned the West Bengal polls. In two other states, governments were overthrown, and in one that held elections in April, Modi’s party was still in control.

With 28 states and eight federal territories, India is home to more than 1.4 billion people. Elections are staggered, with many states and territories casting ballots each year. Midway through his third term as prime minister, the results in West Bengal were expected to improve Modi’s reputation and solidify his position. To create a government, his ruling party had to rely on regional partners following the 2024 national election. In 2029, he is anticipated to seek a record fourth term.
