Poland Will Trial a Suspect in the Purported Zelensky Assassination Plot by Russia

The individual, known as Pawel K., was taken into custody in April 2024, according to the prosecution, who said he had stated his willingness to cooperate with Russian military intelligence. WARSAW: Prosecutors said on Tuesday that Polish authorities have indicted a man accused of assisting Russian foreign intelligence agencies in preparing a potential assassination attempt on the president of Ukraine.

Following collaboration between Polish and Ukrainian authorities, the man—who was named as Pawel K.—was taken into custody in April 2024 and may spend up to eight years behind bars. Prosecutors claim that he had made connections with Russians directly participating in the conflict in Ukraine and stated his willingness to work on behalf of the Russian Federation’s military intelligence.

According to a statement from the prosecution, “the activities were to help, among other things, in the planning by the Russian special services of a possible assassination attempt on the life of… the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky.” According to the prosecution, Pawel K. was tasked with gathering and disseminating security-related information at the Rzeszow-Jasionka Airport in southeast Poland. Poland, which serves as a gateway for Western military supplies to Ukraine, claims that Russian spies have targeted it and that Moscow and its partner Belarus are attempting to destabilise it. The Kremlin has disputed these claims on several occasions.
