Saudi Cabinet Applauds UN Resolution on Gaza Truce

RIYADH: During the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, the UN Security Council passed a resolution urging an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. On Tuesday, Saudi Arabia’s Cabinet reaffirmed the Kingdom’s support for this resolution.

For the first time in the 170 days that Israel and Hamas have been at war in Gaza, the UN Security Council called for an urgent ceasefire on Monday that would endure the whole month of Ramadan.

The US refrained from voting, having previously vetoed motions of a similar nature. It permitted the resolution to pass by acting in this manner rather than exercising its veto power. A rare wave of applause filled the council chamber as the 14-0 decision was supported by every other member of the council.

The Saudi Cabinet met weekly in Jeddah under the direction of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. During the meeting, the ministers discussed Saudi Arabia’s efforts to address the worsening humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip by working with regional and international partners.
