Trump and Iranian Leaders Trade Warnings Amid Widespread Protests in Iran

Tensions between the two nations increased when the United States struck Iranian nuclear facilities in June. On Friday, as protests spread throughout the Islamic Republic, US President Donald Trump and senior Iranian officials exchanged threats. The rallies, which were partially triggered by the collapse of Iran’s rial currency but have seen crowds chanting anti-government slogans, have resulted in at least seven fatalities thus far.

Now in their sixth day, the protests have grown to be the largest in Iran since 2022, when widespread rallies were sparked by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police detention. Nevertheless, the protests have not yet spread nationwide and have not been as fierce as those that followed Amini’s passing.

Trump first warned Iran on his Truth Social platform that the US “will come to their rescue” if it “violently kills peaceful protesters.” Without providing any further details, Trump wrote, “We are locked and loaded and ready to go.

Ali Larijani, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and a former speaker of parliament, said shortly after that the US and Israel were inciting the protests on the social media site X. He did not provide any proof to back up the accusation, which Iranian officials have made numerous times during the nation’s years-long demonstrations.
