Why Moroccan Youth Are Protesting Stadium Investments and Health System Failures

Hundreds of young Moroccans flooded the streets in more than 11 cities over the weekend, staging some of the country’s largest anti-government protests in years and confronting police. Driven mainly by Generation Z activists and coordinated via social media platforms like TikTok and Discord, the demonstrators condemned corruption and criticized the government for prioritizing investments in international sporting events—such as the 2030 FIFA World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations—while neglecting health and education.

Chanting slogans like Stadiums are being built, but where are the hospitals? protesters highlighted the link between Morocco’s inadequate healthcare and state spending on new stadiums with unrest intensifying after eight women died in childbirth at a public hospital in Agadir. Police in both plainclothes and riot gear disrupted gatherings and arrested dozens of demonstrators, including in Rabat, Marrakech, and Casablanca.

The Moroccan Association for Human Rights reported physical assaults and detentions, calling it a crackdown on free voices and restriction of expression. While some detainees were released overnight, many protesters declared they want not just reforms in health and education, but a full overhaul of the system.
