Meet Saudi artist Rakan Kurdi, who is motivated to live life and pursue art on his own terms despite having spinal muscular atrophy from birth.
Kurdi’s adventure with paintings and brushes started early in life when he enrolled in the Children with Disability Association, a Jeddah-based special education program for individuals with impairments.
With his artwork and numerous awards, he has become one of the most well-known artists in the seaside city.
Kurdi, in addition to being an artist, is also a motivational speaker and graphic designer.
He had been an enthusiast since he was a little child, so when his instructor said, “I see an artist in you,” when he was eight years old, it gave him encouragement. To improve your skills, you must practice frequently, study more at home, and focus on your talent.
He added, “My parents decided to enroll me in a regular school in order for me to associate with regular kids,” when discussing the difficulties he had in school. Sadly, it did not work out for me since I was constantly being teased and bullied by students at school. I was unable to continue my education because of this.
