EU to Agree to Remove Sanctions Against Syria

BRUSSELS: Following Bashar Assad’s overthrow, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas stated she anticipated the bloc would decide on Monday to start lifting sanctions on Syria.

At the beginning of a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels to discuss the move, Kallas stated, “It is a step-by-step approach. Following the end of the Assad family’s five-decade dominance, Europe is eager to assist in the rehabilitation of the war-torn nation and establish ties with its new leadership. However, several EU nations are concerned that they are embracing the new Islamist-led leadership in Damascus too quickly.

During Syria’s civil war, the 27-nation EU placed extensive sanctions on the Assad regime and the country’s economy. According to Brussels, sanctions will now be loosened in the hope that the new leadership will fulfil its promises to create an inclusive transition. We are prepared to take the appropriate actions on our side as well, if they are doing appropriately,” Kallas stated.

According to French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, the EU may begin by lifting sanctions on the banking, transportation, and energy industries. According to diplomats, in order to keep pressure on the Syrian leadership, the EU will merely temporarily suspend the sanctions rather than permanently remove them.
