Syria and Jordan Agree on a Strategy For Energy and Transportation Cooperation

LONDON: Jordan’s foreign minister, Ayman Safadi, met with his Syrian colleague, Asaad Al-Shaibani, in Damascus on Tuesday to explore enhancing collaboration. The ministers of water, industry, commerce, energy, and transportation who were part of the Jordanian delegation spoke with their Syrian counterparts about cooperation and signed a deal to create a coordination council between the two nations.

Shortly after the United States declared it would ease sanctions on the nation, diplomatic efforts led to the relaxation of European sanctions, according to Al-Shaibani. He went on to say that the region would benefit from increased energy and transport cooperation with Jordan if sanctions were lifted on Syria. According to the minister, Syria seeks to preserve its security while tackling threats since its security will have an impact on its neighbours, which include Turkey, Lebanon, and Jordan.

Following the shift in power in Damascus in December 2024, al-Shaibani and Safadi were against Israeli action in Syria, according to the SANA service. After 14 years of conflict, Syrians are weary, according to al-Shaibani, and the nation wants to concentrate on preserving security and stability while resolving pressing problems like energy and power. According to SANA, Safadi and Al-Shaibani have decided to create a plan to improve collaboration in the areas of energy, transportation, water, and health.
