SEOUL: According to Russia’s foreign ministry, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Saturday in the seaside city of Wonsan. Lavrov called the two countries’ relationship “an invincible fighting brotherhood.” According to the ministry, Lavrov stated that the visit was an extension of the “strategic dialogue” between the two countries, which was started by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s trip to North Korea the previous year.
According to the TASS news agency, Putin expressed his optimism for future direct discussions in a message sent by Lavrov. According to the ministry, Lavrov also expressed gratitude to North Korea for sending soldiers to Russia.
The war in Ukraine strengthened ties between the two nations. During the months-long war to drive Ukrainian soldiers out of Russia’s Kursk area, thousands of North Korean troops were sent in, and Pyongyang has also provided Russia with armaments. According to TASS, Lavrov also had a meeting with Choe Son Hui, his North Korean counterpart.
After the ASEAN foreign ministers’ conference, Lavrov travelled from Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, to Wonsan on Friday. In addition to its missile and naval installations, Wonsan is home to a recently developed beach resort.
