Hopes of finding more survivors from the powerful earthquake that struck Colombia earlier this week were fading on Thursday as rescue teams scaled back search operations. Families in the hardest-hit areas continued to wait for news of missing relatives.
In Cali, Colombia’s third-largest city, rescue crews have shifted their focus from searching for survivors to clearing debris at many sites, signalling a darker phase of the response after the critical first 72 hours. The 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck shortly after 7:30 a.m. local time on Monday, destroying apartment buildings and damaging homes, schools and hospitals across western Colombia.
Government figures released Thursday said at least 273 people had died, with more than 3,800 injured and 377 people still missing. In Pereira, Enrique Marin travelled more than 10 hours from Bogota after learning that his mother was trapped under the rubble of her home. She was rescued six hours after the earthquake but died while being taken to hospital. Marin stood outside the remains of his home holding a childhood bicycle, which he said was the only item he managed to recover from the wreckage.
