Iturup is an island that is part of the disputed Kuril Islands series, which is claimed by both Russia and Japan, according to the state news agency TASS, which reported on Thursday that Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the island.
A formal peace treaty was never signed by the neighbours during World War Two because the primary obstacle was the ongoing territorial dispute over the islands, which Japan refers to as the Northern Territories. The tour, which was characterized by TASS as Putin’s first in-person visit to the island chain, included a visit to the Yasny fish-processing factory on Iturup. This visit came after Putin had overseen naval drills in the very eastern region of Russia.
The photographs that were seen on the Vesti TV channel showed Vladimir Putin dressed in a dark suit, standing in a room, and looking at two enormous tuna and halibut that were placed on a table. At the same time, two officials were discussing fishing and the behaviour of fish that migrate. He also gave the local fish roe a try during his visit. The chain of islands is a territory that is claimed by both Russia and Japan.
