Hamas claims to have agreed to a ceasefire proposal from Arab mediators in the 22-month conflict that was started by their attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. Israel said it remains dedicated to eliminating the violent group and has not yet replied.
According to Egyptian and Hamas officials who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive negotiations, the most recent proposal formulated by Egypt and Qatar only slightly alters an earlier one put forth by the United States and approved by Israel.
A 60-day truce, the release of some of the hostages that Hamas has held in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian inmates, a swarm of assistance into Gaza, and negotiations on a permanent ceasefire are all part of the agreement.
Israel has promised to keep fighting until Hamas is disarmed and all captives are returned. In a social media statement on Monday, President Donald Trump endorsed similar objectives, stating that Hamas must be confronted and destroyed” in order to guarantee the return of the other hostages.
The two Egyptian and two Hamas officials told The Associated Press about the general outline of the most recent proposal, but they have not disclosed all of its specifics.
