Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party fired its social media chief on Monday as part of an organizational restructuring, the party announced, weeks after youth-led protests magnified on social media forced the resignation of the education minister.
The overhaul is the first under new BJP President Nitin Nabin, who assumed office in January and, at 45, is the party’s youngest leader, a generational shift regarded as part of the BJP’s efforts to retain young supporters. I am confident that under their leadership, the BJP’s digital communication will achieve newer milestones and continue to shape India’s public discourse with conviction, creativity, and clarity,” Malviya told X, referring to Mhaskey and his staff.
Nabin did not detail the reason for the change or what the team will do differently under Mhaskey’s leadership, but he did say that the broader restructuring would further improve the organization and give it “new momentum”. The change comes weeks after tens of thousands of people protested in New Delhi and other cities, demanding the resignation of then-education minister Dharmendra Pradhan following the leak of question papers for a national medical college entrance exam. Pradhan resigned on July 25.
