Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov met on Friday with Colonel-General Khaled Haftar, Chief of Staff of Libya’s National Army, the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed on its Telegram channel.
The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations, military cooperation, and broader regional developments in North Africa. Belousov congratulated Haftar on his recent appointment as Chief of the General Staff, describing it as recognition of his efforts to build Libya’s defense capacity. He also extended best wishes to Haftar’s brother, Saddam Haftar, who was recently named deputy commander of the Libyan National Army, as well as to their father, Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, the army’s supreme commander.
Haftar, in turn, thanked Belousov for the warm welcome and underlined the significance of the talks. “This visit is very useful for us. We were able to assess Russia’s significant contribution to ensuring global stability, he said. The meeting reflects Moscow’s continued engagement in Libya, where Russia seeks to expand its diplomatic and military influence amid ongoing political divisions and regional power struggles.
