Trump’s Struggles with Peace Talks as Ukraine and Gaza Tensions Grow

A month after his high-profile summit in Alaska with Russian President Vladimir Putin, U.S. President Donald Trump is voicing frustration that his push for peace in Ukraine has gone nowhere. He’s let me down,” Trump said this week, acknowledging his disappointment in Putin.

His frustration isn’t limited to Ukraine. In the Middle East, tensions are worsening as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu launches a new offensive in Gaza while also lashing out beyond its borders. After Israel struck Hamas targets inside Qatar, an American ally hosting delicate negotiations, Trump cautioned, “They have to be very, very careful.”

The president’s public display of disappointment stands in contrast to the confident image he likes to project on the global stage. Trump has been campaigning for recognition of his diplomacy, even floating his name for the Nobel Peace Prize, while declaring “world peace” as his goal for the upcoming UN General Assembly. Yet, the world’s most significant conflicts from Ukraine to Gaza appear to be intensifying rather than calming.

This whole last nine months of peace efforts were just a merry-go-round,” said Max Bergmann, a former State Department official under President Barack Obama who now works at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies.
