Saudi Initiative Successfully Removes 1,319 Mines in Yemen in One Week

LONDON: Project Masam, Saudi Arabia’s initiative to remove landmines in Yemen, dismantled 1,319 explosive devices during the first week of October. These devices were planted by the Houthis and other militant groups, according to the Saudi Press Agency.

Launched in 2014 by the Saudi aid agency KSrelief, the project aims to protect civilians from death and injury caused by mines and other explosives. Since its inception Project Masam has cleared a total of 517,818 mines and explosive devices across the country.

In addition to mine clearance the initiative provides training and equipment to local engineers and supports Yemenis injured by such devices. Removing mines from villages and roads and areas near to schools has made it safer for civilians to move freely and for humanitarian aid to reach affected communities.

The project continues to play a critical role in the restoring normal life to war-affected regions of Yemen. Its efforts is to have helped rebuild trust and stability in communities once threatened by hidden explosives. Project Masam remains one of the region’s largest humanitarian mine-clearance operations, reflecting Saudi Arabia’s ongoing commitment to peace and safety in Yemen.
