Farasan Islands Wildlife: Thousands of Migratory Birds Arrive Annually

JAZAN: During their winter 2025 census, the National Center for Wildlife counted almost 10,000 migratory waterbirds in the Farasan Islands Reserve. The Saudi Press Agency said on Tuesday that the results confirm the reserve’s status as a crucial point on international migration routes and a major stopover along the Red Sea.

45 waterbird species were recorded by monitoring teams, demonstrating the reserve’s extensive biodiversity and its function in offering migrating birds safe, food-rich environments. According to the SPA, these findings are a component of the center’s monitoring program, which aims to enhance environmental management and promote wildlife sustainability.

With distinctive marine and coastal ecosystems that draw migratory species and support the preservation of the Red Sea’s ecological balance, the Farasan Islands Reserve is one of the Kingdom’s most important environmental locations. The reserve is the first place in Saudi Arabia to be registered under the Ramsar Convention List of Wetlands of International Importance, the center revealed earlier this month.

In keeping with Saudi Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative, this milestone supports the Kingdom’s efforts to safeguard ecosystems, conserve natural resources, enhance biodiversity, and bolster its involvement in international environmental agreements, according to the SPA.
