LONDON: According to the Lebanese daily Nidaa Al-Watan, the office of US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior advisor, Jared Kushner, has created comprehensive blueprints for a purported “Trump Economic Zone” in southern Lebanon. The Kushner idea has been formally submitted to the White House for review, according to columnist Tarek Abou Zeinab.
According to the column, which cited unidentified sources, the notion has entered “concrete border-related discussions aimed at fast-tracking the plan onto the US administration’s Middle East implementation agenda” and is no longer merely a “whispered” concept within political circles.
Long-term political stagnation has plagued Lebanon. Hezbollah still controls a sizable portion of the south, and Israel unlawfully maintains at least five border outposts that are part of Lebanese sovereignty. Nidaa Al-Watan’s sources claim that the US model links significant infrastructure and investment projects to local security arrangements, framing southern Lebanon as a crucial entry point for a broader economic revolution. According to the plan, it would develop a port connected to international shipping routes, update infrastructure, establish manufacturers and logistics centers, and draw in foreign investment.
