MAKKAH: This week, an innovative electric bus service began operating in Makkah. It is anticipated to serve over 125 million passengers over the next 15 years while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by more than 31,500 tonnes when compared to conventional vehicles, according to Electromin, the service’s developer and operator in collaboration with Umm Al-Qura for Development and Construction.
The bus rapid transit project is reportedly among the first of its kind in the Kingdom, with a system designed to offer greater capacity and reliability than traditional bus services. Yasser Abu Ateeq, CEO of Umm Al-Qura; Samir Nawar, managing director of Petromin; and Amr Al-Dabbagh, chairperson of the Al-Dabbagh Group, officially opened it on Wednesday.
The new service, which is a part of the Masar Destination mixed-use real estate development project in Makkah, is one of the first transport networks of its kind in the nation and represents a significant shift toward a cleaner, more efficient urban transport model, according to Electromin. This Petromin subsidiary specializes in energy and mobility solutions.
According to the company, it runs in designated bus lanes that link important Masar hubs and offer locals and tourists dependable, safe, and eco-friendly transit. There are eleven stops along the route that connects the two main bus stations in the network. It has been made to be easily accessible to all users and to accommodate over 5 million pilgrims and visitors each year.
