New Delhi Sees Large Protest Over Death of Hindu Man in Bangladesh

NEW DELHI: On Tuesday, hundreds of people demonstrated in front of Bangladesh’s High Commission in New Delhi against the lynching of a Hindu man on charges of blasphemy, which has heightened tensions between India, a country with a majority of Hindus, and its neighbor, a country with a majority of Muslims.

Last week, a mob in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district battered and burned 27-year-old factory worker Dipu Chandra Das after accusing him of making disparaging statements about the Prophet. In relation to his death, at least ten persons have been taken into custody.

Weeks before Bangladesh’s legislative election, ties between India and its neighbor have deteriorated due to the lynching, and both nations have halted visa services. Since Sheikh Hasina, the former prime minister of Bangladesh, moved to New Delhi after fatal protests against her last year, relations have been strained.

Television footage showed individuals fighting with police officers during Tuesday’s protest, which was organized by Hindu organizations, as they attempted to break past barricades placed close to the High Commission. Along with burning photographs of Yunus and chanting slogans, some of them were carrying placards calling for a “boycott Bangladesh”.
