Saudi Arabia Expresses Deep Sorrow Over Passing of Ex-Bangladesh PM Khaleda Zia

RIYADH: Following the death of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia on Tuesday, King Salman of Saudi Arabia on Thursday extended a telegram of condolences to President Mohammed Shahabuddin of Bangladesh. On January 1, 2026, mourners and supporters of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party offer prayers at the tomb of former prime minister Khaleda Zia in Dhaka.

The monarch begged for God to show Zia kindness, pardon her transgressions, and grant her entry into heaven. He sent his sympathies to the deceased’s relatives. A similar cable was despatched by Mohammed bin Salman, the Crown Prince.

Huge crowds gathered outside Bangladesh’s national parliament building in the capital on Wednesday to attend Zia’s funeral prayers. Zia passed away at the age of 80 following a protracted illness.

Later on Wednesday, Zia was laid to rest in a park outside the parliament building in the late afternoon with state honors next to the tomb of her husband, a former president who was killed in a military coup in 1981.
