From Bombardment to Bitter Cold: Daily Struggles in Gaza

LONDON: As hundreds of thousands of Palestinians already exhausted by more than two years of Israeli bombardment are battered by torrential rains, flooding, and severe cold, Gaza’s winter nights have become longer and deadlier. Many are so undernourished that they don’t even have the body fat necessary to stay warm.

Fearful of an unexpected Israeli airstrike, families around the enclave sit up all night clinging to their tents to prevent being carried away by flooding or pulled away by high winds. Sometimes older kids carry younger ones to keep them from drowning, and parents carry kids for hours.

Naturally, all of the tents flood when it rains, and all of their bedding gets wet, according to Maysa Yousef, an artist and mother of four from central Gaza. “People cry, beg, and fight for their lives all night long.

Yousef told Arab News, “Civil Defense rushes in, along with rescue crews, to save people.” “They secure the tents and transport families to supposedly safe locations, but since Gaza is completely destroyed, there are actually no safe places; instead, they transport them to schools or other places.”

Those who are attempting to assist suffer from the same issues. At a field hospital in central Gaza, where almost all employees live in tents and have been severely impacted by the winter storms, Yousef’s husband works as a mental health specialist.
