Palestinian Territories’ Gaza City: According to sources in the movement on Monday, Hamas is getting ready to organize internal elections in order to restore its leadership after Israel killed a number of the organization’s key leaders during the conflict in Gaza.
In locations where conditions on the ground permit it, internal preparations are still in progress to hold the polls at the proper moment, a Hamas leader told AFP. It is anticipated that the vote would occur “in the first months of 2026.The conflict, which began in October 2023 when Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on Israel, has largely destroyed the group’s top leadership.
More than two million people who live in the Gaza Strip are in terrible humanitarian circumstances as a result of the war’s devastation. A new 50-member Shoura Council, a consultative body dominated by religious leaders, will be formed as part of the leadership reform process.
The three branches of Hamas the Gaza Strip, the occupied West Bank, and the movement’s exterior leadership—choose its members every four years. Voting is also available to Hamas inmates in Israeli jails. Members from all around Gaza and the West Bank used to congregate at various sites, including mosques, to select the Shoura Council during earlier elections that took place before to the conflict.
