Russian Forces Move Out of Strategic Bases in Northeast Syria

QAMISHLI, Syria: Following the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic troops’ loss of most of its territory in an offensive by government troops, Russian forces have started withdrawing from locations in northeastern Syria, a region still under their control.

When Associated Press reporters visited a location near the Qamishli airport on Tuesday, they discovered that SDF forces were stationed there and that Russians had started removing their equipment in recent days.

The soldiers’ former living quarters were mostly deserted, however some clothing, protein powder, and exercise gear had been left behind. According to Ahmed Ali, an SDF fighter stationed at the facility, the Russian forces started removing their equipment via a cargo plane five or six days ago when they evacuated their positions surrounding the airport.

He mentioned the key Russian base on the coast of Syria, saying, “We don’t know if its destination was Russia or the Hmeimim air base.” “They are still present in Qamishli and have been gradually leaving.

According to UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric, a UN humanitarian convoy from Damascus arrived in Qamishli on Tuesday. He told UN reporters, “It delivered food, blankets, and warm clothes, among other supplies.” “In the upcoming days, more convoys are scheduled.
