Russia Probes Deadly Care Home Case as Siberian Crisis Grows

MOSCOW: A criminal inquiry into patient fatalities at a Siberian neuropsychiatric care home has revealed that personnel failed in their duties, Russian authorities said on Thursday, in the region’s second health crisis this month.

The state Investigative Committee, which investigates major crimes, stated that professional errors by workers contributed to a widespread breakout of a viral infection, which resulted in 46 hospitalizations. At least three people died as a result of the sickness, and six more were being investigated. The care home is located in Novokuznetsk, where nine newborn babies died within nine days of the New Year, sparking outcry and a criminal probe into malpractice.

The Investigative Committee is currently questioning staff, seizing medical records, and conducting forensic tests to discover the reason of the viral spread. The probe is on “sanitary violations resulting in the deaths of patients.

Earlier this month, the regional health ministry reported 46 cases of influenza type A among a sample of 128 care facility residents, with two more testing positive for pneumonia. According to regional authorities, two people died: a 21-year-old lady with cerebral palsy and a 19-year-old guy.
