Japan PM Takaichi’s Party Eyes Landslide Win as Poll Boosts Momentum

A poll by the Asahi newspaper suggested that Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s party is expected to win the lower house election next week by a wide margin. If Takaichi does well in the election on Sunday, it would strengthen her hold on her party and give her the go-ahead for her expansionary fiscal policy. This might make people more worried about Japan’s finances and raise bond yields.

According to a survey released by Asahi on Sunday, Takaichi’s Liberal Democratic Party is likely to get more than the 233 seats needed to win a majority in the lower chamber of parliament. That would be more than the 198 seats that are now available.

The poll suggested that the ruling alliance, which includes the Japan Innovation Party (Ishin), will probably gain 300 seats. The Asahi claimed that the Centrist Reform Alliance, the biggest opposition party, is having a hard time and could lose half of its 167 seats. Takaichi’s ruling coalition has a small majority in the lower house, which is the more influential body, but a small minority in the upper house.
