RIYADH: Iraq recently submitted a proposal to the UN on new maritime borders, which Riyadh claims violates Kuwaiti land. The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected the proposal. According to reports, Iraq provided the UN with updated geographic coordinates in January and February that showed the country’s marine borders.
The Kingdom’s ministry claimed in a statement on X on Monday that the Iraqi file contained modifications that extend to Khor Abdullah and portions of the submerged region next to the divided Saudi-Kuwaiti Neutral Zone.
Under legally binding bilateral agreements, the Kingdom and Kuwait share ownership of natural resources in this region. According to the statement, Kuwait’s permanent water elevations and maritime areas were also affected by the revisions.
Any claims implying the existence of rights for any party in the submerged area beyond the boundaries agreed upon between Saudi Arabia and Kuwait are categorically rejected by the Kingdom,” the ministry stated.
It emphasized that current agreements are in line with the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and are based on bilateral agreements. Riyadh also underscored the crucial importance of Iraq’s pledge to uphold Kuwait’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
