How New Shipping Routes Are Transforming Trade Between Asia and Europe

RIYADH: Following the Kingdom’s addition of CMA CGM’s “Ocean Rise” shipping service to Jeddah Islamic Port, maritime connectivity between Saudi Arabia and important Asian and European markets is expected to grow.

The new route links Jeddah Islamic Port with Southampton in the UK, Rotterdam in the Netherlands, Hamburg in Germany, Xiamen, Yantian, and Nansha in China, and Kobe, Nagoya, and Yokohama in Japan.

The service, which can handle up to 3,001 twenty-foot equivalent units, is intended to facilitate the flow of Saudi exports and imports in collaboration with foreign shipping lines, according to Saudi Arabia’s Ports Authority, also known as Mawani.

As the authority works to improve Saudi Arabia’s connections to regional and global markets, the new line builds on Mawani’s recent expansion of shipping services with major international carriers.

“In keeping with the goals of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy to reinforce the Kingdom’s standing as a global logistics hub connecting the three continents, this addition aligns with Mawani’s efforts to enhance the Kingdom’s ranking in global performance indicators and support global trade flows,” Mawani said in a statement.

According to Mawani, the authority has accelerated efforts to strengthen supply-chain continuity and increase connectivity with key international ports by launching 18 maritime shipping services during the present period, with a total estimated handling capacity of 123,552 TEUs.
