Spotify has signed an agreement with Universal Music Group to let customers make AI-generated covers and remixes of songs, the first time the audio-streaming behemoth is letting users create AI content on its platform.
The firms did not disclose the financial parameters of the contract or which artists will be part of the new feature in their joint announcement Thursday. Artists on the Universal Music label include Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Drake and Billie Eilish.
Spotify’s decision puts it more directly in competition with competitors like Udio and Suno that enable AI music creation. The new service will provide artists and composers another way to earn money beyond what they already make on Spotify, including royalties, the businesses said.“
The building we’re doing is based on consent, credit and compensation for the artists and songwriters participating,” stated Spotify Co-CEO Alex Norström. With AI-generated music gaining momentum and listeners finding it hard to distinguish it from human-produced tracks, major record companies have been exploring alternative licensing models to protect their massive catalogues. Last year, Udio secured settlements with UMG and Warner Music Group to settle copyright lawsuits, and Suno settled with WMG.
