RIYADH: The UN demanded an immediate de-escalation on Monday, saying that fresh threats against Saudi Arabia and freedom of passage were extremely alarming. We reiterate that Security Council resolution 2722 (2024) and subsequent resolutions related to Houthi attacks against merchant and commercial vessels must be fully respected,” Stephane Dujarric, a spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, told reporters.
According to Dujarric, Hans Grundberg, the UN’s Special Envoy for Yemen, has arrived in Muscat for talks following meetings in Riyadh with Rashad Al-Alimi, President of the Presidential Leadership Council; Mohammed Al Jaber, the Saudi ambassador to Yemen; and the permanent five members of the Security Council.
“De-escalation and the need for the parties to agree on a way forward to preserve the gains of the 2022 UN-brokered truce were the main topics of discussion,” he stated. To fully resolve the crisis, Grundberg emphasized the importance of protecting Yemen from broader regional escalation and preserving room for an inclusive, Yemeni-led political process.
