RIYADH: According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the July full moon illuminated skies throughout Saudi Arabia this week, enthralling locals, photographers, and astronomy enthusiasts from the Northern Borders to the Asir region in a celestial display that combined natural beauty with centuries-old cultural traditions. Known as the “Buck Moon” or “Deer Moon” in various regions of the world, the full moon provided unhindered views throughout the Kingdom when the weather was favourable.
According to Adnan Khalifa, a member of the Astronomy and Space Club in the Northern Borders Region, the July full moon is customarily referred to in North American Indigenous folklore as the “Buck Moon,” signifying the time when male deer start growing new antlers. Because it falls during mango harvests in some areas, it is known as the “Mango Moon” in other cultures.
According to Khalifa, these names have their origins in cultural history rather than astronomy, indicating how societies have traditionally connected lunar cycles to seasonal and environmental shifts.
Meanwhile, locals in the Asir region celebrated what is referred to as the “Rutab Moon,” a customary term for the summer date-ripening season. Photographers and skywatchers flocked to Asir’s hilly terrain to capture the seasonal sight as the dazzling full moon shed a striking radiance over them.
