WASHINGTON: According to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, the United States and Iran could come to an agreement by Wednesday to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which would stabilize energy prices. We are in negotiations with the Iranians, and I believe there is a possibility that we will reach an agreement today or tomorrow to open the strait and move toward a more normalized position in this conflict.” Bessent stated in a CNBC interview on Tuesday.
Bessent responded, “I think it would be freedom of movement,” when asked if a deal would permit Iran to impose a toll on ships using the strait. Additionally, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Tuesday that while negotiations with Iran and Oman to allow additional ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz have advanced, no definitive deal has been achieved.
“Those discussions have advanced, but they are still not final. Rubio told State Department reporters, “We’re hoping that will happen very shortly.”Bessent’s remarks were similar to those made by US President Donald Trump on Monday, who stated that the waterway might reopen in a matter of hours following his retraction of threats to launch a huge military attack on Iran.c
