CAIRO: Operations in the impacted area have been paused while an inquiry is conducted after a rockfall at Egypt’s largest gold mine killed one worker and injured five more, according to officials on Sunday. According to a statement issued by the petroleum ministry, the disaster happened “inside a tunnel at an underground working section” of the Sukari gold mine in the eastern desert region of Egypt.
The hospital in the Red Sea resort town of Marsa Alam received the wounded workers. According to the government, first medical evaluations showed that their statuses were stable. According to the statement, Petroleum Minister Karim Badawy ordered the creation of a committee to look into the incident, identify its origins, examine the mine’s health and safety protocols, and suggest ways to stop future mishaps.
Situated approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) southwest of Marsa Alam, the Sukari mine is run by Sukari Gold Mines Company, a joint venture between the Egyptian government and AngloGold Ashanti, who purchased Centamin, the site’s former operator, in 2024. The mine contributes hundreds of millions of dollars to the Egyptian economy each year and generates about 500,000 ounces of gold.
