BAMAKO: According to security and local reports, the JNIM group attacked an army base in central Mali on Sunday, killing at least ten troops. A security source told AFP that the camp in the village of San was “temporarily occupied by the attackers,” with a tentative death toll of “about 10 soldiers killed.”
Violent altercations in the early morning hours were reported by locals. I can attest to the fact that it was a terrorist strike. A San resident who wished to remain anonymous stated, “We heard loud explosions and continuous exchanges of fire.” “Calm has returned,” he continued.
In a statement, the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) claimed responsibility, claiming to have “taken full control of a Malian army barracks in the town of San, in the Segou region, this morning.
The Mali military claimed that after a “vigorous riposte,” the situation was “under control.Since 2012, Mali has been plagued by a severe security crisis, with frequent attacks by local criminal organizations, Tuareg independence movements, and militants connected to Daesh and Al-Qaeda. The military has dominated the nation since two consecutive coups in 2020 and 2021. They came to power on the pretence of reestablishing security, but they haven’t been successful thus far.
