On Monday, President Donald Trump stated that the US already has safeguards in place to regulate and sanction AI companies, dismissing concerns raised by industry leaders over the weekend about the misuse of AI and its potential harm to humanity.
Public concern about the possible risk posed by AI has grown after Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon left last week, in part because “people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade.” AI-related stocks slumped globally on Monday as executives from some of the industry’s major businesses advocated for a halting of the technology’s growth.
“The only control or ‘guardrails’ that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the USA. has that, in spades!” According to Trump’s post on Truth Social, China will benefit from the uncertainty surrounding AI development. Trump plans to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington next week. According to Reuters, lower-level government officials from both countries will hold a separate conference in mid-September to examine AI dangers.
US House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters on Monday that Trump plans to meet with AI executives this week or “early next week.” The discussion would address “the responsibilities of the companies to maintain safety and what role, if any, the government has to play in that.”
