GROZNY: Russia’s election board said on Monday that Ramzan Kadyrov, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was re-elected to a fifth term as the head of his southern, predominantly Muslim territory of Chechnya with nearly 100% of the vote.
In a test of the nation’s tightly controlled political system following four and a half years of war in Ukraine, Russia concluded elections on Sunday for its national parliament, regional legislatures, and governors. The results showed that Kremlin-backed parties and candidates swept the board after most anti-war candidates were barred from running.
In exchange for maintaining the stability of the area, where an anti-Russian, Islamist insurgency raged in the 1990s, Putin gives Kadyrov considerable latitude to govern Chechnya as his personal kingdom. According to Russia’s Central Electoral Commission, Kadyrov received 99.85 percent of the vote in Chechnya, a minor increase from 99.73 percent in 2021. In the past, the small mountainous region’s voting process has drawn harsh criticism from international observers.
Kadyrov frequently emphasises his personal allegiance to Putin and has advocated a tough stance on Ukraine, where he claims his Chechen fighters have been engaged in combat since 2022. He rejects such accusations as Western-backed attempts to weaken his regime.
