WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump will meet with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani during his visit to the city for the forthcoming United Nations General Assembly. The meeting is set for Monday at Gracie Mansion, the formal mayoral mansion, according to Anna Bahr, Mamdani’s communications director.
According to Bahr, the two will address concerns impacting the city and New Yorkers. The White House acknowledged the meeting will take place but did not provide any information. Mamdani, a democratic socialist who defeated former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary before winning the general election in November, is a favourite and frequent political foe for Republicans.
Trump, on the other hand, has frequently been friendly with Mamdani and seemed to admire the youthful mayor. Their first meeting following Mamdani’s election was pleasant, with Trump stating at the White House that the then-mayor-elect will “surprise some conservative people.” During the 2025 campaign, the Republican president referred to Mamdani as a “100 percent Communist Lunatic”.
During a February meeting, Mamdani handed Trump a faux New York Daily News front page that read, “Trump to City: Let’s Build.” That was a parody on the iconic front-page headline from 1975, “FORD TO CITY: DROP DEAD,” which referred to President Gerald Ford’s pledge to deny financial assistance to the city.
