US President Donald Trump welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping to the White House on Thursday for a sumptuous meeting that was heavy on symbolism but light on content, with no signs of progress on thorny subjects such as AI, trade, Taiwan, and the war with Iran.
The two leaders and their families attended a state dinner, which was a black-tie affair with sesame-crusted sea bass and a guest list heavy on IT CEOs. Outside the gate, a group of loud protesters chanted chants such as “China out of Hong Kong,” which were easily audible to the leaders as they posed for photos on the red-carpeted White House steps. In his dinner toast, Trump stated that he and Xi “both understand we represent different systems, but the ties between our people endure, and we’ve never gotten along better.
Trump then asked dinner guests to view the construction site of the new ballroom he is building nearby, hours after showing Xi a helipad he had erected within the White House property. Construction projects are a common diversion for a president who has prioritized overhauling Washington’s physical infrastructure. Xi stated that he and Trump held extensive discussions and developed a “common understanding on many issues” that gave “new strategic guidance for China-US relations.
