NEW YORK: Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Abdulaziz Alwasil, informed the Security Council on Friday that the Kingdom will not permit Yemen to serve as a staging ground for attacks against the Kingdom or threats to shipping in the Red Sea.
Alwasil reiterated that Saudi Arabia would take all necessary measures to defend its sovereignty and citizens during an emergency meeting on the Middle East, as the Iran-backed Houthis intensified attacks on Saudi cities, airports, and critical infrastructure.
“The Kingdom reiterates its commitment to ensuring that Yemen is not used as a staging ground for threats to its security or the freedom of navigation in the Red Sea and Bab Al-Mandab Strait,” he informed the council. It cannot also condone the use of force by a terrorist militia to impose its will on Yemen and the region.”
Saudi Arabia’s right to defend its territory and prevent further attacks was reaffirmed by Alwasil, who also underscored Riyadh’s dedication to a political resolution to the conflict in Yemen. He accused the Houthis of rejecting diplomatic initiatives and choosing military escalation, which has obstructed efforts to reach a comprehensive political solution,” he said, asserting that Saudi Arabia has always prioritised peace over all other options.
