Saudi air Defences Intercepted a Houthi Missile in Khamis Mushayt

RIYADH: Saudi air defences intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile fired by Yemen’s Houthi militia targeting Khamis Mushayt in the Kingdom’s southwest early Monday, while Civil Defence issued an emergency alert in neighbouring Abha before announcing that the threat had passed.

Maj. Gen. Turki Al-Maliki, a spokesman for the Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen, said on the social networking platform X that the missile had been intercepted and destroyed. The Saudi General Directorate of Civil Defence also published an alert on X, warning of a possible attack on Abha. It later announced that the danger had passed. Following a series of attacks on the Kingdom’s major airports in Riyadh and Dammam, the latest developments have shifted the emphasis to southwestern Saudi Arabia.

Khamis Mushayt and Abha, both in the hilly Asir region, have been targeted by Houthi missile and drone strikes in recent weeks. The group has also targeted Jazan and Najran, both of which border Yemen and are home to the Iran-aligned militia. The latest missile intercept occurred amid an increasing campaign against Saudi Arabia’s civilian infrastructure, which includes airports in the country’s central and eastern areas.
