A Rights Group Claims that an Airstrike on a Gold Mine Along the Sudan-Egypt Border Killed 72 People

KHARTOUM: After witnesses detailed scenes of panic in the mountainous area, a Sudanese rights group alleged on Sunday that at least 72 workers had been killed by airstrikes on a gold mine on the Sudan-Egypt border.

The Egyptian air force was accused of carrying out the attack by the Emergency Lawyers rights organization. Egypt has not released an official statement, and AFP was unable to independently verify the account. The attack on Saturday was the second on Jabal Al-Uqaydat this year. In June, 23 workers at the unofficial gold mining location were killed by airstrikes that were allegedly carried out by Egypt.

The Egyptian army declared at the time that it had carried out a “large-scale operation” against illicit gold mining within its borders, but it did not claim the strikes. The resource-rich Halayeb triangle is a disputed border between Egypt and Sudan. However, in its conflict with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, Cairo is a crucial supporter of Sudan’s military.

The Emergency Lawyers, which records crimes in Sudan’s conflict, stated that the attack on Saturday “resulted in the deaths of 72 civilian miners, according to preliminary information, while efforts to document and verify the casualty toll are ongoing.
