Libya's Capital is Paralysed by Torrential Rains and Flooded Streets

TRIPOLI: According to his company, a bank employee was killed on Tuesday as heavy rains inundated the streets of Tripoli, the capital of Libya, submerging cars. Security forces declared the capital’s ring road closed, and the government directed public services to begin immediate efforts to drain the floodwater.

As floodwaters inundated utility boxes, Jumhouria Bank said on Tuesday that one of its employees had died by electrocution while approaching the bank’s Tripoli offices. The General Electricity Company chose to cut power in certain Tripoli districts to reduce the risk. Videos of drivers scurrying out of their cars as they fill up with water have circulated on social media and in local media.

Images posted on social media show that the central hospital and other buildings in the city centre were inundated, with water seeping into the hallways. The National Meteorological Centre issued a warning to residents in valleys and near wadis on Monday night after forecasting severe rainfall over the country’s northern region. Municipal officials clear manholes and drainage networks, which are frequently choked by sand blown in from the desert, every summer to prepare city streets for the rains.
