ISTANBUL: On Wednesday, Istanbul was inundated by torrential rains, which prompted the governor’s office to close schools, grant leave to certain public sector employees, and advise residents to remain at home.
According to media reports, the flooding of homes and businesses, as well as the inundation of roads and underpasses, resulted in traffic chaos and the stranding of vehicles in the city of approximately 16 million individuals. There were no reports of severe injuries.
Footage obtained by NTV television showed that in one district, bystanders rescued a woman who was being carried down a street by the floodwaters. The report stated that firefighters rescued an additional individual who was ensnared in a flooded cellar. In another neighbourhood, images depicted numerous parked vehicles being carried away by the floods.
The governor’s office announced that education would be suspended for one day on Thursday, and state employees with disabilities and mothers with young children would be granted leave. It recommended that residents remain at home unless travel was absolutely essential and that individuals residing in basement apartments spend the nite elsewhere. Meanwhile, motorcycles were prohibited from operating in traffic.
