President Donald Trump asserted Friday that Republicans had a shot at success in the US midterms, despite a frenzied finale to the campaign for elections that will determine who controls Congress. A day after cancelling them and prompting worries about his health and the condition of the race, Trump reversed course and reinstated two Kansas and Iowa events.
Trump, who was hosting US captive Stephen Hubbard, just liberated by Russia, in the Oval Office, told reporters: “Typically a president, whether he’s good or bad, Republican or Democrat, loses the midterms. Trump said he had cancelled the two events to host virtual rallies, but Republicans in Iowa and Kansas contacted “and they said if you could go, it would be better than a tele-rally.
But the 80-year-old’s remarks were a far cry from a vigorous assessment of Republican prospects in the November 3 elections. On Tuesday, Republicans defend their 53-47 Senate majority, while Democrats try to win at least one chamber of Congress and blunt Trump’s legislative agenda during his final two years in office.
Trump has made himself the ccenterpieceof the Republican midterm strategy, expecting it will rev up his MAGA (Make America Great Again) followers. But President Trump’s abysmal approval ratings and public outrage over the Iran war and cost of living could hurt Republican chances.
