Greece has Committed to Providing over $670,000 in Support for Hospitals in East Jerusalem

LONDON: Greece has promised 600,000 euros ($671,000) to help Palestinian hospitals in occupied east Jerusalem, the Palestinian Authority said Monday. The agreement was signed by the Greek consul general in Jerusalem, Dimitrios Angelosopoulos, and Palestinian Authority minister of finance and planning Estephan Salameh, the Palestinian WAFA news agency said.

The money will be paid under the EU’s Pegase program, a financial mechanism set up by the European Commission in 2008 through which the Palestinian Authority receives EU support to help pay public sector salaries and provide services in essential sectors such as education and health. The agreement will be implemented by the Office of the European Union Representative in Jerusalem with the Palestinian Authority. European countries gave €9.29 million in aid in April to fund medical services for Palestinians in Jerusalem.

The Augusta Victoria Hospital and other hospitals in the city, such the Al-Makassed Islamic Charitable Society Hospital, offer specialised care for patients recommended by doctors in the West Bank and Gaza who lack the materials or equipment to provide the necessary therapy. Since 2013, the EU has apparently contributed over €225 million to provide such referrals for Palestinian patients needing treatment for cancer and other diseases.
