U.S. Strikes in Strait of Hormuz Prompt Further Doubts About What’s Next

TEHRAN: What comes next is in question after an apparent limited US strike on Iranian sites in the Strait of Hormuz just hours before Tuesday’s midterm elections. US President Donald Trump has been saying for weeks now that he was considering launching a new wave of strikes on Iran after the elections. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged Trump to take military action again just days ago, according to two regional officials and a third person familiar with the subject.

The Middle East and beyond have been waiting on edge for the possibility of the US resuming full-scale operations against Iran for the first time in almost two months. Talks to avert that are underway, and other U.S. allies in the area are pressing the U.S. not to renew the more than eight-month-old conflict that has shaken the world economy and inflicted misery on Iran.

Trump has oscillated between the prospect of big attacks and a deal with Iran. His Republican Party has been vulnerable as it tries to maintain control of Congress, partly because of the unpopular war and its effect on U.S. petrol prices and other sections of the economy.
