Moscow: Regional officials announced on Saturday that a helicopter carrying 22 people the majority of whom were tourists had vanished in the far east of Russia on the Kamchatka peninsula.
In a video uploaded to Telegram, Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov stated, “Today at about 1615 (0415 GMT) communication was lost with a Mi-8 helicopter…which had 22 people on board, 19 passengers and three crew members.” According to Russian authorities, rescue crews using helicopters have been searching for the missing aircraft through the night, concentrating on a river valley where it was supposed to fly.
The missing helicopter had dropped off passengers near the ancient volcano Vachkazhets in a picturesque region of the peninsula renowned for its untamed scenery and active volcanoes.
According to an emergency services source, almost immediately after takeoff, the helicopter vanished from radar, and the crew reported no issues.
According to the local weather service, there was low visibility near the airport. The far east of Russia is a sparsely populated region with frequently severe weather, making plane and helicopter accidents there extremely common.
Eight people were killed when a Mi-8 helicopter carrying 16 people 13 of whom were tourists crashed into a Kamchatka lake in August 2021 as a result of poor visibility. Twenty-two passengers and six crew members perished in the July crash that year when the aircraft was coming in to land on the peninsula.
