At COP16, the EU will Promote Integrated Solutions to the Land and Water Concerns

RIYADH: At COP16 in Riyadh, the EU will step up international collaboration to tackle pressing concerns like food security, biodiversity loss, and water scarcity while collaborating with partners from around the world to fight drought, desertification, and land degradation.

The EU will have a forum to push for more robust action on these interrelated global issues during the 16th Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, which takes place from December 2 to 13. According to a recent press release, these problems, when exacerbated by climate change, threaten social, economic, and environmental stability.

The EU stresses that resolving these issues is essential to maintaining its long-term security, improving competitiveness, and safeguarding its strategic autonomy.

Jessika Roswall, the EU Commissioner for Environment, Water Resilience, and a Circular Competitive Economy, will lead the EU delegation to COP16.

Every year, 100 million hectares of productive, healthy land—roughly twice the area of France—are lost worldwide. We have no food if our soils are not rich and fertile. People lose their means of subsistence when there is no healthy land,” Roswall stated. She said: “The EU will play a crucial, leading role in the negotiations in Riyadh and is committed to working with international partners.
