MARMARIS, TURKIYE: Following past attempts to carry aid to Gaza that Israel halted in international seas, ships from the Global Sumud Flotilla sailed for a third time on Thursday from southern Turkiye. More than 100 pro-Palestinian activists were taken to Crete, and two others were detained in Israel after Israeli soldiers intercepted the flotilla’s vessels after it had previously left Spain on April 12.
At a time when the world’s focus had switched to other issues, such as the effects of the Iran war, activists on the flotilla leaving from the Turkish port of Marmaris claimed the flotilla needed to reach Gaza in order to deliver much-needed supplies to the enclave.
Susan Abdullah, a member of the flotilla’s steering committee, stated, “It’s very important that what’s happening around the world is not allowing us to see Gaza for the situation as it is.” The barrier is still in place. The assistance is not arriving.
The group had previously been intercepted between Sicily and Crete, according to Katy Davidson, an activist from the British delegation on the flotilla. She said that the British government “did nothing” in response. Davidson went on to say that any interception would assist raise awareness of the crisis even if the flotilla was unable to reach Gaza.
